Ammoniacal Nitrogen a toxic pollutant found in landfill leachate and in waste products, such as sewage, liquid manure and other liquid organic waste products. Ammoniacal Nitrogen hinders the reduction of BOD & COD in ETP & STP.
Methods to be discussed for Ammoniacal nitrogen (NH3-N) removal are.
1. Ammonia Strip
2. Pre-anoxic denitrification
3. Post-anoxic denitrification
Ammonia Strip
Indeed, Ammonia strip is a way to remove ammonia but only when inlet ammonia is not more than 100 mg/l
Pre-anoxic denitrification
Pre-anoxic denitrification is suitable When BOD/TKN ratio is > 4 and target % Removal of Nitrogen < 75%
Post-anoxic denitrification
Post-anoxic denitrification should be used if BOD/TKN ratio is < 4 &/or target % Removal of Nitrogen > 75%
Example
Given inlet Parameters
Clearly as per data given Ammonia stripping cannot be used for the removal of ammonia as inlet ammonia is greater than 100 mg/l
Pre-Anoxic Denitrification is not a viable option as clearly BOD/ TKN ration is not greater than 4.
BOD/TKN ratio is less than 4, Hence Post Anoxic Denitrification is the best practice for the removal of Ammonia.
